The NEMA 17 stepper motor is the default drive on nearly every desktop FDM printer. A 2-phase hybrid stepper motor in a 42 mm frame with a 1.8 degree stepper motor step angle gives 200 full steps per revolution — a clean match for the belt pitch and lead screws on X, Y and Z axes, and fine enough for extrusion once microstepping is applied.

Which 17HS model fits which axis?
X and Y axes need acceleration and speed more than raw torque. The 17HS4401 (40 mm body, 1.7 A, 40 N·cm holding torque, 280 g) is the workhorse here. Step up to the 17HS8401 — 52 N·cm in a 48 mm body — when you run a heavier carriage or higher acceleration.
Z axis loads are static, so holding torque is what stops the gantry dropping at power-off. The 17HS8401 or the 60 mm 17HS9403 (2.3 A, 70 N·cm) suit dual-Z and heavier gantries.
Extruder is a weight problem, not a torque problem. The short-body 17HS0410 (20 mm, 10 N·cm) and 17HS2408 (28 mm, 12 N·cm) cut moving mass in direct-drive toolheads while still feeding filament reliably.

What to check before ordering:
● Holding torque against the load your axis actually carries
● Rated current and phase resistance, so driver and supply stay within limits
● Phase inductance — low inductance (2.8 mH on the 17HS4401) holds torque at high step rates
● Body length and motor weight, which drive inertia and print quality
